Dominique Davis: Seizing the day with community service
For Dominique Davis, a soon-to-be graduate of Bowie High School and future student of the University of Maryland College Park, life is about to get very exciting, and many new opportunities will soon arise. But for Davis, the birth of these opportunities is a product of those she seized before—chances to excel through community service. “I like to help… I like animals and I like people,” said Davis, speaking of her service experiences helping Prince George’s County Parks and Planning. She is sure to do so often, working with Watkins Park, Building Blocks, Diamonds and Pearls as well as various community center activities. “They knew I’d come and help whenever,” said Davis, who first became involved with M-NCPPC as a teenager in order to complete a requirement for Girl Scouts. Her first activity was to blaze a trail in Watkins Park—hard work, but a fun challenge for Davis. From there, she just kept going, learning that she not only enjoyed nature, but influencing other people and interacting with other teens. Her activities helping others in high school inspired her to become a doctor, a dream which she will begin to pursue in college. Davis said that by volunteering and looking for positive influences, she became more mature throughout her high school years, which helped her to be successful. In this way, her experiences with M-NCPPC were not only unique, but helped shape her future. “Just always look out to see what is going on around you,” Davis says as advice to younger teens, “there are so many great things.”
