Teen Field Trips Foster New Opportunities
Xtreme Teens certainly allows for Prince George’s youth to become acquainted with their communities and peers locally with endless teen events and programs. However, opportunities abound for branching out as well. Teens from all over the county get to have new experiences and meet new people each month as a part of Xtreme Teens field trips. “It’s fun because I… get to go out and do things,” said 12-year-old Aaliyah Jenkins before a laser tag field trip with the Prince George’s Plaza Community Center. “I never went laser tagging before and always wanted to go.” Some other opportunities to get out include holiday-themed trips during December, such as the Festival of Lights, bowling, ice skating, and Six Flags in the summer. Prince George’s Plaza staff member Pamela Stewart said that at this center, youth typically have two field trip opportunities each month, and that some, like the Halloween Haunted House and Café Groove, take place at other community centers, allowing teens to socialize with peers from other areas. “There’s some people my age,” commented Aaliyah, “and making more friends is fun.” PHOTO CREDIT: CASSI HAYDEN 2011
